Little Black Polka Dot Dress

style on a budget, what to buy for spring, spring outfit ideas, north carolina blogger, polka dot dress, spring style, mom blogger

Hey y'all! I hope your week is off to a great start! Today, I'm sharing this little black polka dot dress again. I originally shared it in this post: Five Ways to Wear a Polka Dot Dress and I totally stole one of my own ideas for this look! I also included this dress in yesterday's 20 Piece Capsule Wardrobe for Spring in case you missed it. It was such a fun post to put together!

Even though I'm a style blogger, I'm really not an impulse buyer, at least not any more. Now, I'm better at finding where I have holes to fill in my basic wardrobe. I try to be as thoughtful as possible when making a new purchase to decide whether or not it's really going to be a useful item in my closet. But to be honest, this polka dot dress was definitely an impulse purchase for sure! I have always loved polka dots. It's just such a simple, happy print that my eye is drawn too! I also really love little black dresses so this dress caught my eye as soon as I saw it on the website. I didn't even read the reviews (which is very unusual for me), I just added my size to the cart and immediately checked out. Well, the good news is this turned out to be a really great impulse buy because I've already worn this dress several times and several different ways.

I really love that it's longer in the back and it also has the cutest little gold button details. I styled it with my neutral espadrille sandals, a palm leaf tote, and gold jewels to complete the look. I found that I really didn't need a lot of accessories to feel put together; the dress did that all on it's own!

20 Piece Capsule Wardrobe for Spring

style on a budget, spring capsule wardrobe, north carolina blogger, spring outfit ideas, what to wear for spring, spring fashion
Happy Monday! While I was laying in bed trying to fall asleep last night, I realized it has been over a year since I've shared a capsule wardrobe here on the blog. A capsule wardrobe is a collection of clothing items (filled with mostly essentials) that you can mix and match. I absolutely love the concept of a capsule wardrobe because it keeps things simple and practical, while still remaining stylish! I feel like a capsule wardrobe is such a great solution for busy mom or women who need comfortable outfits without all of the fuss. A capsule clothing collection is also great for your budget! If you can commit to 15-20 pieces of great basics per season and just add in new things as necessary, you can really save so much money! Some of these items even work for multiple seasons!

The most important part of a capsule wardrobe is that your pieces can be mixed and matched with each other. Versatility is key! When I put this collection together, I stayed with comfortable basics that can dressed up or down, depending on the occasion you are dressing for.

This spring capsule wardrobe includes the following pieces:

S I X  T O P S
I picked a white tee  (of course), a gray tank, a lightweight sweater, a striped tee, a white button up, and a wrap top. These are basics that will make getting dressed simple!

T W O  D R E S S E S
I picked two dresses; a t-shirt dress for a casual look and the polka dot dress that can be dressed up for a more fancy occasion (but it also can work casually as well).

F I V E  B O T T O M S
For bottoms, I picked a classic pair of comfortable skinny jeans, white denim, pull on shorts in a fun color, denim shorts, and a leopard print skirt.

T W O  J A C K E T S
I had to include a denim jacket because it's a year round staple for me and a must have in any capsule wardrobe. I also picked up a lightweight zip up hoodie that's perfect for throwing on for the weekend or a chilly spring morning.

T H R E E  P A I R S  O F  S H O E S
I went with one pair of classic white sneakers, a leopard print slide sandals, and a pair of neutral heels that will dress up any outfit.

T W O  B A G S
I picked a straw tote bag that will hold all the things plus a rattan crossbody bag when you need a smaller bag. Both bags will go with everything!

You can make so many different looks with these 20 pieces! I'm also sharing some outfit examples that you could make with these exact pieces or something similar that's already in your closet. Even if you aren't wanting to do a true capsule wardrobe, it's also just really important to have a solid foundation of basics in your closet. Pieces that never go out of style like a white tee and a denim jackets. Things that are good quality and will last a long time are essential.

Ten outfit ideas using this 20 piece capsule wardrobe:

Currently Loving

style on a budget, north carolina blogger, target style, spring outfit ideas, spring outfit inspiration, mom style
Happy Friday! I hope you've had a great week! I might be the only one saying this but this week went by so fast for me (maybe because I was so busy) that I didn't even realize it was already Friday. We have some fun plans this weekend, including my semi-annual closet sale. If you are a local lady who would love to shop some gently used clothing and accessories, definitely send me a message so I can get you the address for the sale. I'll have so many great items for great prices!

Today, I'm sharing my weekly roundup of what I'm currently loving. I already own and love several of these pieces and the rest are on my personal wish list!

Which of this week's picks is your favorite?!

1. T O P | This top is at the top (no pun intended) of my wish list! I love the color, the dots, and wrap style. I love it so much!

2. B A G | I already own an identical bag and it's my go-to this time of year. It holds so much without being heavy. So perfect for the beach or really, any day!

3. S A N D A L S | Slide sandals are my favorite. I love being able to literally slide shoes on my feet and head out the door. This cute pair is under $15!

4. E S P A D R I L L E S | I absolutely love a neutral shoe that can go with everything like this pair. How cute are they?! Perfect for dresses, shorts, and skirts. So fun!

5. S H O R T S | Anyone else get tired of short shorts?! I don't even normally wear shorts under a four inch inseam but sometimes I want a little more length without having to wear jeans. These shorts are the answer! I love the longer length that they provide without being frumpy. Bonus: you don't have to shave as much of your legs, lol!

6. T E E | Y'all loved this tee over on Instagram when I shared it yesterday. It's a super budget friendly option and even better in person that it looks online. I stuck with my normal size and I think it fits true to size. If you want a more relaxed fit, size up one. It's such a fun tee!

7. R I N G | I already own this ring in two colors and I love it. I wear it daily!

8. D R E S S | Black dresses are my favorite kind of dresses. I really love the button detail on the front of this budget friendly option. It would look great with those espadrilles above!

Thanks so much for visiting! I hope you have a great weekend!

No. 2 Leopard Pencil Skirt

style on a budget, spring outfit ideas, spring outfit inspiration, what to wear for spring, north carolina blogger

Happy Thursday! I hope you're having a great week! Today's post is all bout my No. 2 Leopard Pencil Skirt from J. Crew. When I did my J. Crew Spring Dressing Event back in March, I had the exciting opportunity to put together an outfit complimentary as a thank you for hosting the event. As you can tell, my style is very casual but for the event I wanted to dress up everyday casual so I picked this skirt to style. I originally paired it with a graphic tee, the same denim jacket, and heels for the event. As much as I loved that outfit, it wasn't something that I would really wear in my everyday life, particularly the heels. Also, this is also the first pencil skirt that I have owned since I first started teaching back in 2008. When I started teaching, I felt like I had to own a pencil skirt!

So, that brings me back to styling this skirt. I loved it dressed up with heels but that just wasn't going to work on a daily basis. I stood in my closet on Easter morning, with my styling wheels turning to try to figure out how to style this skirt in a casual yet put together way with no heels. I looked at my shoes and the sandals I had, just didn't look right but then I spotted my white Converse sneakers. I tried them on with the skirt and I loved how they gave the skirt a more casual feel.

I normally follow my spring outfit formula (a white tee and a denim jacket) but the white tee just didn't give me the look that I was really going for. It was just a little too matchy matchy with the white sneakers. I had just picked up with gray tank the day before so I tried it on and I loved it! This tank has a relaxed fit so it was perfect for side tucking into the skirt for some waist definition. This overall look just felt very comfortable yet put together. It's definitely not your traditional Easter Sunday best but I loved it!
