Weekend in Charleston

Hey y'all! If you follow me over on Instagram, then you know that we did some adventuring in downtown Charleston during Labor Day weekend. My father-in-law lives less than 45 minutes from downtown Charleston so we love to go explore the area when we are visiting him. A lot of our adventures in Charleston were cost free. Yes, you can go to downtown Charleston, spend a few hours, and spend very little money. I am a super budget conscious person so before we go anywhere, I always Google things to do in the area that are free or low cost. I can almost always find a great comprehensive list of free/cheap things to do in pretty much any city! You can totally travel and experience new things on a small budget. I really don't shop when I travel (this really surprises a lot of people, lol), I save my spending money to try new foods and drinks in the place we are visiting or for something that's an experience, like an activity or museum. I rarely buy anything else! I'm always on the team of experiences are so much greater than things!

We ended up going to downtown Charleston on Saturday and Sunday; Saturday with whole family, including my husband, Josh's dad and stepmom, our kids, plus Josh's twin brother and his fiancée. Then Sunday it was a double date. Our visits did cost a little bit of money because we got drinks, lunch, and dinner during our visit. But we are always smart when dining out. We almost always share a plate, especially when we are traveling. Sharing helps us not get overly full or we don't have to worry about waiting food. I don't like wasting anything, especially food! Also, it's just so much cheaper! Sometimes we will get two appetizers so that we can try different things, especially if it's a place to never eaten at before. Also, sharing leaves room for dessert and they are so many fantastic ice cream shops and bakeries in the downtown area!

You don't have to look very hard to find all of the Southern charm that Charleston has to offer. Just simply look around and you'll see it! We love to check out the amazing architecture and historical spots on Rainbow Row (check out this link for more about this area; such great information for your own free, self-guided tour). Since we were being budget conscious, we did our own walking tour but can get guided tours in a horse drawn carriage! We have been here so many times but I feel like there is always just so much to see. They also have ghost tours as well and we did one of those awhile back. Charleston is just such a beautiful city and Rainbow Row is my favorite!

For lunch, I wanted to try something new so we went to Poogan's Porch, based on tons of recommendations. However, I honestly can't recommend it. I feel like I give a whole lot of grace when it comes to restaurants but if I don't have a good experience, I just have to be honest with y'all. The hostess staff wasn't welcoming, the waitress was very rude, and the food was overpriced for the small portions and average food that they delivered. I was so disappointed because I had heard such good things. Just overall a really bad experience.

Our next stop was to get a drink at The Skinny Dip. I was craving frosé because it was so good the last time two times we have visited! This place was seriously so Instagrammable. There's a store downstairs and upstairs is a coffee and wine bar (plus beer). We love everything about it! Next, we went back to a restaurant called The Rarebit on King Street that we have been two a couple times before, which was just a few blocks down the street from The Skinny Dip. We found out about this restaurant by chatting with the barista at The Skinny Dip the last time we were here. Asking locals where to go eat, is often how we find the best places! We went back there for the amazing Moscow Mules (the best I've ever had) because we really wanted Josh's family to try them. We only got drinks this time but I've eaten there twice before and the food is excellent. I would definitely recommend The Rarebit to everyone! We love it!

By this point, we were hungry again since we didn't eat much at lunchtime so we took a pedicab to dinner! We had never done this before but Josh's dad wanted to try it out so we went all took a fun ride. It's six dollars per person and such a fun experience... plus it's a really good break from all of the walking downtown. Our pedicab took us to D'Allesandro's Pizza for dinner. We discovered this pizza place again by asking a local at The Rarebit for a pizza place suggestion. This place was a hidden gem! The staff was amazing and the food was delicious. Josh couldn't stop saying for at least two days how good the pizza was. We definitely recommend it!

On our second day in Charleston, this was a double date, like I mentioned earlier. Charleston is super kid friendly but we were excited to have a kid free day to hang out as well. Our first stop was to 5Church, a restaurant and bar that had the most incredible architecture. Seriously, this place was so beautiful! We just got drinks here and I loved the rosé flight. This place is a must see!

For lunch, we went to Juanita Greenberg's for margaritas and nachos. This place was affordable and very laid back. I would definitely go back!

We had to make one last stop at the waterfront and Rainbow Row before we went back to Josh's dad's house. It's just such a beautiful city, even in the rain and clouds! I can't wait for our next trip!
