Scent Workshop

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a great weekend! Our weekend was busy spending time with family, shopping with my mom (I introduced her to Madewell for the first time and now she's in love with their leather bags), going to a baseball game, church, and one of the biggest highlights of this past weekend was the candle workshop I attended at Scent Workshop in Greensboro!

Scent Workshop just recently re-branded this month, it was formally known as Bloom Anthology. Lindsay, the owner, wanted to the new name to be more reflective of what her business actually is. It's a workshop where you explore scents to create your own custom candles and fragrances. I met Lindsay for the first time when she did an event at our local Madewell store. She made my husband and I our own custom fragrances right there in store and I immediately fell in love with her business! Lindsay began this scent journey back when she took went to a perfuming workshop in Paris and the rest is history! How fun is that?! Her business also gives back by donating through Kiva to help women entrepreneurs around the world.

This past Saturday was actually my second visit to her workshop, which is located at Revolution Mills in Greenboro, North Carolina. The workshop is so aesthetically pleasing! It's gorgeous. Like I said, this was my second time there but it was my first class. Lindsay invited other women in business and I together for a private candle making workshop, for networking, and to learn from one another. It was such a great evening and I left feeling so inspired!

The candle making experience was even more fun than I had imagined! Who knew I could be a candle maker?! I am a type one ennegram so I really like knowing procedures and what to expect when I go somewhere. Lindsay make this one feel confident when I arrived because everything is organized so neatly! I loved the booklet and the instructions. It was so helpful!

The first step was to do some sniffing! I had actually sniffed most of the scents when I visited the workshop for the re-launch party. I am personally always drawn to floral and fruity scents so I went back to those and narrowed down my favorites. My top two scents from the sniff test were tropical and ripe apple. They both smelled so good to me!

Next, Lindsay had us close our eyes and think about how we want to feel as well as what they feeling reminds us of. I wanted to feel joyful and the feeling of joy always reminds me of going on vacation. I wanted to create a candle that brought those feelings back to me when I burned it! Floral and citrus scents actually were listed on the chart below with joyful. I didn't even notice that until after I had already selected the word joyful!

The next part of the process was the mixing to find your perfect scent formulation. I went back and got my top five scents. They little bottles are diluted formulas of the scents and are mixed with coconut oil so that they aren't too strong or overwhelming... since the whole class is mixing so many different scents at the same time.

I thought for sure I would go with something tropical but I really loved the combination of ripe apple and wild peony. I started with three drops of wild peony and then added two drops of ripe apple. I took one sniff of this formulation and knew it was the one. It smells so good!

After I selected my favorite formulation, Lindsay does some math to add the scents to the wax for you. After she added the scents, I stirred the wax mixture for two minutes before pouring it into the jar, where I had already placed the wick. It took about 45 minutes for the candle to set.

Before leaving, I selected a label for my jar. You can choose a generic Scent Workshop label or you can customize yours with a special name or just the formula you used to create your custom scent.

Lindsay recommended waiting at least three or more days before lighting the candle plus some other great tips for making your candle last as long as possible. I can't wait to burn my joyful candle that is filled with apple and peony goodness!

If you are in the triad or surrounding areas, I would highly recommend taking a class at Scent Workshop! This is such a fun idea for team building, girls night, date night, or really any day! I had so much fun and I can't wait to go back to take another class. This was such a fun experience! You can find out about upcoming classes and learn more the Scent Workshop website.
