thrifty: homemade laundry detergent for sensitive skin

I love making things myself and I love saving money. A friend gave me a sample of her homemade laundry detergent and it smelled amazing! I washed a few loads of clothes with it and my clothes came out so clean and smelled great. Unfortunately, my girls have very sensitive skin and it didn't work out for us due to the fragrance. Since then, I have been hoping to find a formula that would work for our family. I stumbled upon an idea on Pinterest and made it my own. This formula works for HE machines. It doesn't have the amazing scent that I loved about my friend's detergent but it still cleans great and doesn't irritate the girls' skin plus it's so inexpensive to make! Our laundry comes out fresh and clean.

What You'll Need:
- 1 box of 20 Mule Team Borax.
- 1 box of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda.
- Any type of bar soap that works for your skin.

What To Do:
- Mix 1/2 cup of Borax, 1/2 cup of washing soda, and 1 cup of grated soap. I doubled the recipe twice to make what you see above. This is a gallon jar (from Wal-Mart) and it's about 3/4 full.
- I used a cheese grater to grate my soap but this could also be done in a food processor.
- Use a spoon to mix the 3 components together.

Tips:
- Use about 1 tablespoon of detergent for a small load.
- Use about 2 tablespoons for a heavier/more soiled load (my husband's clothes).
- Borax is toxic if ingested so be careful. If you use a kitchen measuring cup, be sure to hand wash it thoroughly and run it through the dishwasher before using it again.
