Hey y'all! It's another snow day here and I'm not sure when my kids will go back to school?! But, I am loving the time at home to work on unfinished projects, finish my Christmas shopping (online, of course), enjoy some family time, and just relax. December can be such a busy month that feels like it just breezes by and before we know it, it's over. I feel like these snow days are a gift. A gift to just slow down, rest, and enjoy this beautiful season!
Today, I thought it would be fun to share some of our family's snow day traditions (new and old)!
S A U S A G E B A L L S | I shared these on my Instagram stories on Sunday and I was so surprised at how many people had never heard of them. They are a pretty common breakfast item where I live so I have grown up eating them. We also always make them on Christmas morning and really any other slow morning at home.
My favorite thing about sausage balls is that you can come up with so many different flavor combinations by changing up the type of cheese you use, adding it various seasonings, or using a different type of sausage (we love Neese's with extra sage)!
This is the basic recipe I use each time I make them:
Ingredients:
-2 cups of Bisquick
-2 cups of shredded cheese
-1 lb. of sausage
Directions:
1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix together with hands.
2. Roll mixture into walnut sized balls.
3. Bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees.
P L A Y O U T S I D E | My husband is way better at this part than I am, haha. Being cold isn't my favorite but I always bundle up with my kids and husband to get outside. We always do a little sledding, make snow angels, throw snow balls, and build a snow... lady. My girls had so much fun accessorizing her with items from their bedrooms. I love how she turned out!
M U L L E D W I N E | This is a new tradition for us but I have been wanting to try mulled wine. I grabbed this Winter Wassail when we were at Trader Joe's and an inexpensive bottle of Zinfandel wine to finally make this warm drink (which literally tastes like Christmas in a cup).
Mulled Wine Recipe:
Ingredients:
-4 cups of Winter Wassail (you could also use spiced apple cider)
-1 bottle of dry wine (preferably red but white works, too)
-2 cinnamon sticks
Directions:
1. Combine ingredients in a pot on the stove.
2. Keep the burner on low and let the mixture simmer for at least 10-15 minutes.
3. Enjoy a cup!
4. The remaining mulled wine mixture can stay on the stove until you are finished drinking it but don't let it boil at all.
You can also add cranberries and orange slices for even more flavor!
F A M I L Y T I M E | When my husband is at home, we try to spend as much time together as a family, especially on snow days. I'm pretty sure we watched every single family friendly Christmas movie on Netflix. It's also a tradition to play Uno as a family! We all get a little bit competitive when we play but we have so much fun. My girls love earning candy after each round for showing good sportsmanship during the game!
What are your snow day traditions?! I would love to hear them!
Thank you for visiting! I hope you have a wonderful day!
S H O P T H E P O S T:
We got about 15 inches of that snow. We live in Kingsport, TN which is about 90 minutes from North Carolina. We have always had sausage balls around Christmas. I just love your pictures of your kids and the snow.
