Splurge vs. Steal Mascara Review

mascara review, beauty product review, style on a budget, makeup review

Hey y'all! I have never done a splurge vs. steal beauty product review but I thought it would be fun to share my experience trying out a new mascara. This post is not at all sponsored by either mascara brand but the links are affiliate links so if you purchase one of them from my link, I may make a commission from the sale.

I have been using the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara for about six months now and it has become my new favorite. I have always been a drugstore mascara kind of girl (because I'm cheap) but I had a gift card to Ulta and decided to purchase an item that would normally be a splurge for me. I have loved using the pricier mascara but I spotted the L'Oreal Lash Paradise mascara at Target over the weekend. It claims to have many of the same benefits so for less than half the price of the splurge mascara, I thought it was worth a try. Several ladies messaged me on Instagram after seeing my story about trying this mascara so I wanted to highlight my experience as well as some of the pros and cons of each mascara. I also want to mention that I did not figure in whether the waterproof factor in the steal version was effective since my splurge mascara wasn't waterproof.

Pros
This mascara makes your lashes pop! I have pretty fine lashes (see photo of my lashes below) but with three coats of this mascara, my lashes look so full. It also stayed in place all day long without running and it looked just as good at the end of the day.

Cons
The biggest con is definitely the price! Twenty three dollars for mascara just isn't realistic for most women. I personally think it's expensive. Another kind of silly con for this one is the name. I thought the name was witty until my seven year old was in my bathroom reading my beauty products. She started to sound this one out and yeah, it was just awkward, lol. And finally, this mascara can get clumpy, it's not super easy to take off, and it does take three coats to get the look I want.

Pros
The price of this mascara is amazing! It's about ten dollars at Ulta but I also found it for nine dollars at Target. I also achieved the look I was looking for with three coats of this mascara. The mascara went on very minimal clumping and lasted all day long. I loved the volume and extra length this mascara added to my eyelashes!

Cons
Really the only con I have for this mascara is that it takes three coats to achieve my desired look. But I feel like almost any mascara on the market takes at least that many coats to get a full lash look without using fake lashes. Also, I do want to mention that I couldn't remove this mascara with just my makeup remover wipes (because it's the waterproof version) but it did come off with coconut oil fairly easily.

My Favorite
I have been such a fan of the splurge version but I also love a good deal! I personally think the L'Oreal Lash Paradise is just as good of a mascara as the Too Faced one. With the same amount of coats, I got a very similar look but I did find that my lashes looked less clumpy withe the less expensive mascara. My final verdict: save your money and buy the steal!

  2. You're the second person who said the L'Oreal one didn't make their lashes as clumpy. I've never tried the better than sex mascara but I love to try new mascaras. I'm going to have to go find this!

  3. How I can't believe how similar the packaging looks though. lol
I'm actually not the biggest fan of the Too faced one, I think it's too wet and makes my lashes look clumpy. BUT I do like the waterproof version of it.

I'll have to give this a try though! I'd rather spend the money on this and it sounds like something I would like

  10. Your mascara review is really awesome. Thanks to share this beautiful Mascara review. It's really helpful for eye makeups.I believe makeup is an important part of women's life and a perfect lipstick gives a great look of hole makeup. I love to use this mascara for my eye and my favorite Liquid Matte Lipsticks for my lip. I can't imagine a single day without my makeups.
